PlaceMUS XR

Digital Journey across Musical Places in Europe and Extended reality

About the Project

The PlaceMUS XR project develops innovative digital tools

which will be integrated in the ECCCH, to enrich knowledge and experience with the European musical heritage. Tools enable users to
1) create, share and re-use interactive content,
2) analyse, design and verify visitor interactions, for the benefit of researchers, museum curators, creative industries, the educational and tourist sectors.

Our goal is to provide interactive experiences that engage users at cognitive, aesthetic and emotional levels, through Virtual and Augmented Reality combined with rich multimedia content.

Users can access these experiences remotely as fully digital explorations or on-site as integrated physical-digital journeys along physical visiting paths.

PlaceMUS XR imagines Itineraries and Places of Music in Europe as extended realities, where the musical events are closely connected to their spatial, acoustics, cultural and historical and social contexts, as well as to museum objects.

Our tools cover the whole production pipeline: creation, visualisation, and interaction with 3D scenarios (immersive and non-immersive), story maps development, user experience analyses, accessibility of musical contents and practice, and finally sound communication design in museums.
The project demonstrates its approach through relevant case studies, spanning different genres and themes, periods, regions, and audiences.  At the same time, digital tools will enable the creation and integration of new contents and paths beyond the project’s lifetime.

Project Focus Area

Methodologies

PlaceMUS XR describes acoustic itineraries with a keen awareness of the interconnected orchestral nature of music and space. The project employs 360° representations enriched by sound, time, and contextual 3D dimensions, harmonized within detailed spatial-acoustic models (immersive VR), tailored storytelling, and story maps.

Impacts

PlaceMUS XR establishes soundscapes as a vital dimension of cultural heritage research, with all tools openly available. The project broadens access to Europe’s musical heritage, deepening public engagement while supporting cultural tourism and creative industries. Communication efforts will raise the volume of awareness, promoting accessibility and collaboration among institutions.

Case Studies

At least 7 itineraries will be implemented as case studies. Each itinerary unfolds as a symphony of places, represented through spatio-temporal and thematic cartography, detailed 3D models with spatial acoustic reconstruction, and interactive 360° views. Some itineraries will unfold through geographical journeys, others through the lives of composers and musicians, and others through harmonies.
